Bio
Professor Jaiki Lee graduated from Seoul National University in
Nuclear Engineering with the B.E. in 1972 and M.E. in 1977. He
received his Ph.D. at the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign
in 1985. Before joining the faculty of Hanyang
University in 1993, he worked for the Korea Atomic Energy
Research Institute and the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety.
Professor Lee's major field is radiation protection. He served at
the Special Committee on Nuclear Safety under the Nuclear
Safety Commission (NSC) of the Korean government for several
years and worked for NSC in the term of 2003-2005. He also
served for other organizations including the Korean Association
for Radiation Protection (KARP, President, 2008-2009), the
Korean Nuclear Society (KNS, vice president, 2007), the Korea Radioisotope Association (vice
president, 2007-2009). He is the chairman of the board of the Korea Radiation Safety Foundation
and the chairman of the Review Committee for Nuclear Regulatory System, an advisory
committee for the Korean Nuclear Safety and Security Commission. Professor Lee led couple of
mid-term research projects in radiation protection field: development of Korean reference
phantoms for radiation dosimetry and an assessment of radiological detriments of Korean
population. In particular, the radiation dose levels received by Koreans from a variety of sources
were first evaluated in the second project. He published over 70 papers in international journals.
He was awarded the Presidential citation in 1999 for his scientific achievement and won a medal
in recognition of his service for nuclear safety.
Currently, Professor Lee is a member of KARP, KNS, the Korean Society of Medical Physics,
Health Physics Society (USA), Risk Analysis Society (USA) and the Korean Radioactive Waste
Society. Professor Lee was elected as a Main Commission member in 2005, and he is in his third
term now.
