Since 2002 he is full professor in Bioinformatics and director of the Centre for Integrative Bioinformatics (IBIVU) at the VU University Amsterdam. Heringa has served as expert evaluator of EC FP5 and FP6 proposals and as external evaluator of EC FP5 and FP6 project mid-term reviews. He has also served on the board of the USA National Institute for Health (NIH) as an evaluator of NIH-NIAID Resource Center proposals. Nationally he served as member of the national NWO/Horizon and NWO Computational Life Sciences committees. Heringa is on the editorial board of the journals Bioinformatics, Bioinformatics and Biology, Computational Biology and Chemistry (CBAC), Current Peptide and Protein Research (CPPS), Evolutionary Biology Online and the Encyclopedia of Life Sciences.
