Career Trajectory
Bio
Biologist interested in the ecology and evolution of diseases.
Teaching
I teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels in Biology, mainly on topics related to disease ecology, microbiology and evolution. An important part of my teaching commitment is to supervise students for their Bachelor, Masters or PhD theses.
Research
My research group studies the ecology and evolution of bird borne pathogens, ranging from field studies and surveillance all the way to detailed genetic and immunological studies in the laboratory. The main pathogen system is avian influenza virus, where we have followed virus and host dynamics in a migratory population of Mallards since 2002. At present this research focuses on three areas: A) long-term virus evolution in a reservoir host, B) interplay between virus and host immune system, and C) migration and dispersal of influenza viruses.
We also work with bacterial infections, including the epidemiology and evolution of the multihost zoonotic bacterium Campylobacter jejuni, and the emerging tick-borne pathogen Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis.
My research is a part of the Linnaeus Centre for Ecology and Evolution in Microbial Model Systems (EEMiS), a center of excellence within the university.
