Trees stand during their long lives, and furthermore as wooden buildings or materials they continue to support our activities for longer time. I am conducting research on mechanism of long-durable nature of wood, in terms of ultra-fine structure of woody cell walls and species-specific properties. As for education, one of my goals is to help students acquire advanced scientific skills as well as broad viewpoints in arts and sciences, which are necessary for studying “the culture of wood” specific in our country. Working in Kyoto and Nara, the center of wood spirit in Japan, I would like my results open to public so that they may be useful for better understanding and preservation of our wood culture.
