As associate professor in Solar Cell Technology, I divide my time between teaching Masters courses in solar energy and leading research on next-generation optoelectronic materials. My research centers on exploration of robust, abundant materials that could enhance solar cell performance and lifetime while reducing costs. The experimental materials science is supported by first principles theory and, increasingly, automation of physical and analytical processes for better, faster data generation.
I have over 15 years of experience in the field of novel thin film chalcogenide solar cell materials. In 2010, I received my PhD in Physical Chemistry from the University of Bath on the topic of Kesterite/Cu2ZnSnS4 thin film synthesis. After that I joined Uppsala University as a postdoctoral researcher, later becoming a permanent staff member. My research encompasses development of robust solar absorbers for sustainable photovoltaics, using scalable synthesis techniques such as sputtering. The scientific focus is on the chemistry of thin-film material formation and the derivation of synthesis-composition-structure-property relationships, as a means to control and optimise new materials. The materials of interest are primarily chalcogenides, including kesterites and, more recently, wider gap absorbers suitable for tandem cells such as chalcogenide perovskites. My innovative team has employed techniques such as combinatorial synthesis and characterization, as well a strong collaboration between experimental work and first-principles theory approaches, to provide fundamental insights into poorly studied materials. More recent directions include development of automated equipment and processes, aimed at higher data-generation rates, as a precursor for AI-led materials exploration
I am also co-director of Sweden's national center of excellence for solar electricity, SOLVE.
