Career Trajectory
Bio
Since 1999, he has managed a research group dedicated to organic synthesis with organometallic complexes and to the synthesis of derivatives of biomolecules for NMR structural biology studies. Funding has been due to seven public research projects (the latest RT2018-095588-B-100). In addition, he has collaborated with companies such as Lilly (5-year contract) for the synthesis of new ligands for the metabotropic glutamic acid receptors, and with a company specialized in flow chemistry (CSFlowChem). The scientific production of the group is summarized up to now in 70 indexed publications, 42 of them published in journals with impact indexes belonging to the first quartile (Q1), 1 patent and more than 80 communications to conferences. 8 Book chapters have also been published. The main line of the group has consisted of developing methodologies for the Pauson-Khand reaction such as the introduction of aromatic enynes as substrates or the promotion by molecular sieves and the development of this reaction in a plug flow reactor; also the applications of ruthenium carbenes in combined metathesis reactions with Diels-Alder and others, as well as non-metathetic processes such as cyclopropanations, cycloisomerizations and [2+2+2] cyclotrimerizations. The group has disclosed the synthesis of molecules with potential activity such as iminosugars and enzyme inhibitors (in collaboration with Prof. Ricardo Murillo, Cajal Institute, and Prof. Javier Cañada from CSIC). In 2005-2006 he carried out a stay at the Center for Biological Research (CSIC) working on resolution of peptide structures by NMR and in conformational studies (Prof. Jiménez-Barbero). He continues to collaborate with this group of the CIB and has collaborated with Prof. Thomas Peters (U. of Lübeck, Germany) on this topic synthesizing carbohydrate derivatives linked to lanthanides for the use of paramagnetic effects in structural studies by NMR. In the medium term, the main interests of the group will be the development of new reactions in flow reactors in collaboration with the company CSFlowChem, including their scaling up and applications in drug synthesis; the study of new reactivity catalyzed by ruthenium and cobalt complexes in unsaturated systems, especially cyclopropenes; and the continuation of the synthesis of paramagnetic tags to solve structural biology problems.
General quality indicators for scientific production: He has been granted 5 six-year terms (sexenios, the actual one: 2015-2020), by an agreement with ANECA of USP. The 88 articles listed in the WOS have received a total of 3,356 citations with an average of 38.1 per article. The average of total citations for the years 2017-2022 is 197 per year. Of the 88 publications, 53 articles belong to the first quartile (Q1). The h-index is currently 29. All this data has been obtained from the Thomson Reuters Web of Science.
Contributions to formation of students and young researchers: Throughout the 28 years of teaching experience he has taught General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry (Chemistry and Pharmacy), Advanced Organic Chemistry (Chemistry), Organometallic Compounds, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Scientific Methodology; postgraduate PhD courses such as Advanced NMR, Asymmetric Organic Synthesis, Natural Products, and master courses such as Structural Elucidation of Drugs, and Natural Products as a Source of New Drugs. He has supervised 12 doctoral theses, and more than 20 dissertations, DEAs or master's thesis, as well as numerous final degree or degree projects. He is ANEP project evaluator and is referee evaluator for major publishers (ACS, RSC, Wiley). Evaluation of the international quality seal for the degrees of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of the UCM in 2019 for the ANECA (Exp 2500312).
Other contributions to society: He develops an intense work of scientific dissemination. More than 80 dissemination videos and 50 articles, many about the evolution of the pandemic (eldebatedehoy.es). Talks in schools and institutes, participation in the Science Week and in the Winter School (USP) with conferences; organizing committee of the annual bioethics congresses, USP. He is author of two books and several book chapters on the origin of life, free will and other topics.
