个人简介
Karen Meech is an astronomer who specializes in planetary astronomy, in particular the study of distant comets and their relation to the distribution of volatiles in the early solar system. The studies of these distant comets will enable us to map out the physical, chemical and dyna-mical conditions in the early solar nebula at the time of planet formation. Meech is a co-investigator on the 8th NASA Discovery mission, Deep Impact that launched in January 2005 and arrived at comet P/Tempel 1 in July 2005. The mission goals were to create an impact crater utilizing a 350-kg copper impactor, to watch the formation of the crater and to dig below the evolved surface materials of a comet and study the pristine interior. One of her roles as a science team member on this mission was to coordinate all of the ground-based observing support for the mission. Meech was also a co-investigator on the EPDXI mission, the extended Deep Impact mission that flew past the nucleus of comet 103P/Hartley 2 on November 4, 2010 and on the Stardust-NExT mission that re-used the Stardust spacecraft to fly past the nucleus of comet 9P/Tempel 1 on February 14,2011. The Stardust-NExT mission goals were to assess the changes on a comet surface between two perihelion passages, and to identify the impact crater created during the Deep Impact mission. Meech has also led the University of Hawaii NASA Astrobiology Institute since 2003. The research centers around the theme of water and building habitable worlds, including an investigation of water's origin, transport to earth role in crust/mantle interactions, and life in the extreme watery environments on earth. Meech received her B.A. in space physics from Rice University in 1981, and a Ph.D. from MIT in planetary physics in 1987. She received the Annie Jump Cannon Award in Astronomy in 1988, the Urey Prize in 1994 from the American Astronomical Society, and was the recipient of the University of Hawaii 2015 Regents medal for Research Excellence.
