个人简介
After my graduation in Biotechnological Engineering in 2003, I joined the Center for Neuroscience of Coimbra (CNC, Coimbra, Portugal) to develop my MSc thesis, where I characterized the signal transduction pathways involved in the yeast's response to several stresses. This raised yeasts as a basic model to study inflammatory/stress responses at the cellular level and to assist in the search/screening of new anti-inflammatory drugs (1 first author publication in J. Biol. Chem. and 2 co-author publications). In 2006, I joined J Lerma's lab (Instituto de Neurociencias, Alicante, Spain) to perform my PhD in neuroscience, where I could provide the first link between activity, i.e. glutamate, and neurocytoskeleton dynamics during neuronal development, raising kainite receptor as the key tether linking synaptic contact formation and neuronal maturation. These results were published in J. Neuroscience (first author publication awarded with Best Paper 2014 award by Portuguese Society for Neurosciences) and reviewed in Neuron. In 2013 I joined RJ Rodrigues' lab at CNC (Coimbra, Portugal) to explore the pathological role of purinergic and glutamate receptors in brain diseases. I contributed to determine that P2Y1R contributes to glutamate-induced neurodegeneration (Simões et al., 2018) and to synaptic and memory loss in Alzheimer's disease models, raising the concept that this newly identified pathway may constitute a degenerative mechanism shared by different brain diseases. This work was supported by an international grant from Alzheimer's Association (NIRG-15-361884) in which I was Co-PI. I have been also exploring the existence of hybrid P2X/GluN receptors, establishing a new receptor concept (manuscript under revision; Postdoctoral fellowship SFRH/BPD/107903/2015). I also contributed to 8 co-author publications on the physio-pathological role of purinergic signalling. I also started my transition towards my scientific independency by exploring a new line of investigation dedicated to explore brain diseases from the perspective of brain development, merging my interest/expertise in brain development (PhD) and disease (postdoc). This has been successfully accomplished, attested by the attribution of CEEC Individual 2017 (Junior level) and of my first grant as a PI (PTDC/MED-NEU/28160/2017; 238,834€). In this realm we have been exploring the role of purinergic receptors in neuronal migration during embryogenesis (Cerebral Cortex 31(12):5652) and in the synaptic remodeling in the adult brain in pathological conditions (Scientific Reports 12(1):14690). Also, I supervised 3 BSc and 2 MSc theses, and 1 PhD student, and participated in teaching in post-graduate programs.
