个人简介
Dr. Jürgen Mahlknecht is a senior scholar in the field of Environmental Geosciences, with an academic and professional journey spanning over 25 years. He earned his Ph.D. from the esteemed University Bodenkultur Vienna, Austria, and has since made remarkable contributions to the scientific community through his research, teaching, and leadership roles.
Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Mahlknecht has held a research assistant position at University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences (Universität für Bodenkultur Wien), Austria, and National Autonomous University of Mexico (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México), Mexico; as well as a faculty position at University of Guanajuato, Mexico, and at Tecnologico de Monterrey, Mexico. In 2004, he joined Tecnologico de Monterrey, where he established himself as teacher, mentor and supervisor, guiding the research of 5 Ph.D. and 21 MSc. students while overseeing applied research and consultancy projects.
One of the highlights of his career was his appointment as the founding director of the Water Center of Latin America and the Caribbean, a groundbreaking collaboration between the Interamerican Development Bank (IADB), Tecnologico de Monterrey, and FEMSA Foundation. During his tenure, Dr. Mahlknecht demonstrated remarkable vision and leadership by spearheading the establishment of a state-of-the-art laboratory and a decision center. In addition, he developed a capacity building program that provided invaluable training to water agencies across more than 20 Latin American countries.
At the core of Dr. Mahlknecht's research lies a profound interest in groundwater, environmental tracers (including isotopes), water chemistry, and the assessment and degradation of emerging contaminants. His expertise also extends to hydrogeochemical models, water resources management, flow and transport models, and the application of statistical methods in water research. His overarching goal is to comprehensively understand and address the challenges related to freshwater resources in water-scarce regions, ultimately offering effective mitigation strategies.
As a prolific author, Dr. Mahlknecht has contributed significantly to the academic literature with over 130 international journal articles, garnering more than 3300 citations and boasting an impressive h-index of 29, according to Google Scholar. He has also authored six book chapters and has been involved in three book editions.
Beyond his research endeavors, Dr. Mahlknecht actively engages with the scholarly community through his editorial contributions. He served as an associate editor for Hydrogeology (Springer) from 2014 to 2017, and later for Science of the Total Environment (Elsevier) from 2019 to 2025. Furthermore, he was appointed as a topic editor for Current Opinion of Environmental Science and Health (Elsevier) in 2022. His dedication to academic journals extends to membership on the editorial board of Environmental Pollution (Elsevier) and serving as a peer reviewer for over 60 international journals, including esteemed publications such as Nature Sustainability and Science Advances.
Dr. Mahlknecht actively participates in assessment committees, notably as a member of the multidisciplinary assessment committee (MAC) of the "Innovation Fund" for the Canada Foundation of Innovation in 2023. He has also been invited to serve as an assessment committee member for the Mexican Science and Technology Commission (CONAHCyT) on multiple occasions, further solidifying his reputation as a respected expert in his field.
His contributions and commitment to excellence have earned Dr. Mahlknecht several accolades. Notably, he has been awarded the Romulo Garza Award from Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico, on two occasions (2019 and 2023). His status as a member of the Mexican National Researcher System (SNI level 2) since 2019 reflects his influential role in advancing scientific knowledge. In addition, he has received the Dr.-Karl-Schleinzer Award from the Universität für Bodenkultur Wien, Austria, and the Eternit-Tiefbau Award from Eternit Tiefbau company, Austria, both in 1999. Furthermore, he has served as expert in isotope hydrology capacity-building courses and missions along Latin America, organized by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
