Bio
My research has focused on the study of adaptive immune response mechanisms and the possibility of modulating immune responses. Particularly, my research has aimed at studying CD4+ T lymphocytes, as a subpopulation of lymphocytes essential to efficient adaptive immune responses. Aside from its interest in basic science, the study of T lymphocyte activation is important to two practical goals, namely i) to foster the development of efficient immune responses to pathogens and tumors, and ii) negatively modulate unwanted immune responses including autoimmune diseases, allergies, or transplant rejection.
In a first stage, mi work was aimed at the pharmacological modulation of immune responses. Then, in 1986 I entered Prof. Charles A. Janeway’s lab at Yale University. There I studied the structure of the TCR/CD3 antigen receptor complex of T lymphocytes, and its physical and functional relationship with the CD4 co-receptor. Besides, I successfully tried to identify new costimulatory molecules in T cells. Within these lines, I could analyze a functionally relevant phenomenon, namely the variability of CD3e chains of the TCR/CD3 complex. Concerning the costimulatory molecules, mi work focused on the costimulatory properties of human and mouse Complement regulatory molecules like MCP (Membrane cofactor protein, CD46) and Crry. Besides, I contributed to the discovery and I have studied in depth the functional properties of the CD28-like costimulatory protein ICOS (Inducible COStimulator, CD278) and its ligand (ICOS-L, B7h, B7-H2). In turn, the role of Class I PI3 kinases including p110a subunits in the costimulatory signals of ICOS has led our group to study the immunomodulatory potential of these kinases that are often involved in tumor development. In all these instances, I have been interested in the application of the knowledge to experimental models of human disease including autoimmune inflammatory diseases like arthritis or autoimmune encephalitis, or anti-tumor responses.
I have participated as a co-author in more than 100 publications. I have been part in more than 18 Research Projects. and have been Principal Investigator in 10 Projects funded by competitive public calls. I have been Tutor of seven Ph.D. degree Thesis. Furthermore, and aside the mentioned publications, I have participated in many Spanish and International Congresses and Meetings, with more than 100 oral or panel communications.
I have been Executive Director of “Inmunología”, the official Journal of the Spanish Society for Immunology (2005-2010), and Head Scientist of the Animal Facility of the Centro de Investigaciones Biológicas, CSIC (1995-2005).
I have acted as “ad-hoc” reviewer of Research Projects in Spanish and regional Competitive Calls for the National Agency for Research (ANEP, AEI) since 1990. I have been also “ad-hoc” reviewer for international competitive calls from the “Multiple Sclerosis Society” (U.K.), the "Italian Multiple Sclerosis Society" (AISM-FISM) or the “Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council” (BBSRC, U.K.). Last, I have acted as an Expert for the evaluation of research project calls from the Horizon 2020 Program of the European Union.
I am Corresponding Member of the Spanish “Real Academia Nacional de Farmacia” since 1992.
