Career Trajectory
Bio
I obtained my PhD in Physics at Universidad Complutense de Madrid in 1999 with a thesis about cobalt nanowires and cobalt-phosphorus microtubes that I prepared using electrolyic deposition. Then I moved to the Laboratoire de Physique des Solides (LPS) at Université Paris-Sud (France), the first months hired within a European project and then two years with an individual Marie Curie fellowship. At LPS I worked in Magnetic Force Microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, mainly analysing magnetic materials that were interesting for magnetic storage and spintronics. I joined the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) in 2003, in particular at Instituto de Microelectrónica de Madrid (IMM) with a "Ramon y Cajal" contract, where I became Tenured Researcher in 2006. Besides studying magnetic materials, I worked in noble metal nanostructures with plasmonic properties as well as in their combination with ferromagnetic materials to exhibit magnetoplasmonic effects. In 2014 I started a new research line: nanostructured coatings exhibiting antibacterial properties. In 2017 IMM changed to Institute of Micro and Nanotechnology, where I am now Research Scientist and Head of the Department of Fabrication and Characterization of Nanostructures. For several months in 2017 I was a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Nanomedicine Lab of Northeastern University (Boston, USA), where I enhanced the performance of the antibacterial coatings by adding biocide nanorods and started working in anticancer nanoparticles. In 2020 I have been a Co-founder of Nanostine, a spin-off devoted to research, development & commercialization of high added value nanoparticles and nanostructured coatings.
I am an expert in experimental techniques for fabrication (such as electron-beam evaporation and magnetron sputtering) and in physical characterization techniques (especially magnetic force microscopy, MFM). In the last few years I have led the projects entitled “Magnetic antidots” (arrays of nanoholes in magnetic thin films to tailoring properties and developing devices), “Large area advanced materials based on nanopillars and nanoparticles”, “NeuPES (Electrical stimulation with nanostructured electrodes)” and “Nanoimplant” (nanostructured coatings with antibacterial properties).
