John W. Elrod, Ph.D., FISHR
Dr. John Elrod is the founding Director of the Aging + Cardiovascular Discovery Center in the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. He received his Ph.D. from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine where he published foundational work on the cytoprotective mechanisms of hydrogen sulfide in the lab of Dr. David Lefer. He then trained under Howard Hughes Investigator, Dr. Jeff Molkentin, as postdoctoral fellow where his work helped define a physiological function for the mitochondrial permeability transition pore. Dr. Elrod leads a multidisciplinary research lab working in the fields of mitochondrial biology, metabolism, fibrosis, and cell death in the context of cardiac injury, heart failure, and neurodegeneration. The lab has made several discoveries in the field of mitochondrial biology, including defining the signals in the heart that match energy production with the amount of work the heart is performing and how this can turn maladaptive and trigger cell death. Characterization of the pathways regulating mitochondrial calcium transport has resulted in numerous high-impact publications including a seminal study published in the journal Nature, a first for a Temple laboratory in over 30 years. Other breakthroughs include defining how changes in metabolism are directly linked to epigenetic regulation of cell fate in the context of fibrosis and putting forth a new hypothesis of Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis, which is being interrogated for new therapies. Dr. Elrod has published over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and his work has been cited over 15,000 times. In 2022, he was honored as a Fellow of the International Society of Heart Research for his scientific accomplishments. In addition, he was awarded the Faculty Research Achievement Award, the highest university award for research achievement, and the LKSOM Excellence in Education Mentor Award. He has trained numerous students and postdocs, all of whom have garnered competitive fellowships and awards. He sits on the editorial board of several prestigious journals and is actively involved in leadership roles in the AHA and ISHR.
