Career Trajectory
Bio
My background is that of a registered nurse and midwife, having worked 15 years delivering nursing care and 2 years as a midwife. After this in 1980 I undertook work in Higher Education as nursing lecturer firstly at the University of Technology and then moving to other universities. Over all I have worked 35 years in higher education as a lecturer and then as a senior lecturer undertaking teaching, running courses and being a project co-ordinator, having involvement in small research projects that I led, and supervising research Masters students and Bachelor of Honors students. In 2012 I was asked to work at the New South Wales Nurses and Midwives' Association (NSWNMA) as a professional officer in the Professional Team. I checked nursing and midwifery policies, checked research projects for approval, and finally took up the Environmental Health Portfolio. This meant moving from my health promotion interest to the promotion of a healthy environment. I was involved in running day seminars on nurses needs and environmental health, getting staff involved in the School Student Climate Change Marches, forming an active group of climate change activists, and undertaking submissions on issues that affected our NSW community members such as pollution from coal-fired power stations. I undertook a project on assisting the Upper Hunter Community in the Transition from coal-fired power to renewable power with the supposed closure of the Liddell Power Station in 2022. I retired from NSWNMA in March, 2022. Currently I am involved in another project about the validation of the need for student nurses to undertake an Environmental Sustainability Healthcare Curriculum. I received an Australian College of Nursing (ACN) Scholarship for this work and am working with a colleague as well. The School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Newcastle have become involved and ethics has been acquired. So far we have submitted a paper to Heliyon: 'A scoping review: Embedding sustainability and climate change into Australian pre-registration nursing curricula.' . My colleague and I will also present a paper on Sustainable Healthcare for nurses at the National Nursing Education Conference to be held at the Gold Coast, Sea World in Queensland from 6-9 June 2023.
