Bio
Joanna MacLean is an Associate Professor and Clinician-Scientist in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta. She is a Pediatric Respirologist and the Medical Director for the Sleep Laboratory at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Dr. MacLean received her undergraduate and medical degrees from McMaster University and her PhD from the University of Sydney. She completed her pediatric residency and pediatric respiratory medicine fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children and the University of Toronto and her pediatric sleep medicine fellowship training at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead.
Dr. MacLean’s research program and clinical practice focus on understanding and treating respiratory and sleep-related breathing disorders in childhood with a focus on high-risk groups. Her on-going studies include a provincial population study of children using non-invasive ventilation, a scoping review with subsequent systematic reviews of non-invasive ventilation use in children, and a data linkage study exploring phenotypes of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea. She co-leads the sleep data sub-team of the Medicine Strategic Clinical Network and is an active member of the Women & Children’s Health Research Institute.
