Bio
My research is mostly theoretical and related to controlling light. Currently, I work mostly on pixellated optical components that allow light rays to be refracted in novel ways that appear (but aren't actually) "forbidden" by wave optics. Previously I have invented a device for sorting individual photons according to their orbital angular momentum; pioneered algorithms for shaping a light beam's 3D intensity distribution (which is relevant to a number of fields, for example optical trapping, which other people in the group do in the lab); and dabbled with optical resonators, most notably resonators with fractal eigenmodes (which are, sort of, analogous to video feedback; my mugshot shows me "doing" video feedback.)
I am the Features Editor of the Journal of the Optical Society of America A, a Review Editor for the journal Frontiers in Optics and Photonics, and I serve on one of the committees that organises the annual international conference Frontiers in Optics. Since 2017, I am a Fellow of the Optical Society (OSA).
In May 2012, I appeared as some form of expert on the BBC programme Coast (Series 7, Episode 1), trying to explain an atmospheric phenomenon called the "green flash".
