Bio
In 2012, João Calmeiro started his BSc internship work in the Molecular Biology Department at CEDOC, NOVA Medical School, Lisbon, Portugal. There, he contributed to the full development, production and characterization of several polyclonal antibodies. In 2013, João Calmeiro moved to the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology (CNC), University of Coimbra, under the supervision of the late Dr. Sukalyan Chaterjee, to study Transthyretin (TTR) and its possible implications in diseases of the nervous system. He developed several cloning structures of TTR mutants for posterior application in drug screening platform. In 2014, João Calmeiro started his MSc work in CNC, at Dr. João Peça’s Neuronal Circuits and Behavior Group where he created four novel channelrhodopsins displaying desired spectral absorption shifts (color-tuned) for optogenetic studies, using bioinformatics tools, biochemical and molecular biology techniques.
The work of João Calmeiro has granted him an award, the Gulbenkian Prize “Estímulo à Investigação 2015”, awarded by Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian. This award was covered by national media, with mainstream articles in “Publico”, “Diário de Notícias” and “Correio da Manhã”. In 2016, João Calmeiro started a Research Fellowship at the Center for Neuroscience and Cell Biology, University of Coimbra, where he continues to develop his latest project, focusing in the development and characterization of novel channelrhodopsins.
