Bio
João Carlos Salvador Santos Fernandes (PhD in Chemical Engineering, Instituto Superior Técnico, 1997, Dip. in Chemical Engineering, Instituto Superior Técnico, 1987), joined IST in 1987. He is Associate Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering and a member of Centro de Quimica Estrutural (CQE).
His scientific interests are in the domain of interfaces and surfaces engineering, with special relevance for the study and development of advanced materials showing high corrosion resistance. The work involves aluminium alloys used in aeronautics and is of special relevance for national and european industry. Within this framework, surface modification by ion implantation, coatings and anodising processes to replace chromium-based formulations has been carried out.
The above studies use electrochemical techniques (e.g. E.I.S.), surface analysis techniques (e.g. Auger Electron Spectroscopy and XPS) and modelling of the corrosion processes.
The development of material for biomedical use, such as impant materials, is also one of his current research areas. Special attention is given to the use of memory shape alloys as NiTi, with the aim of avoiding the release of nickel ions to the physiological media, and to the development of protective coatings for resorbable magnesium alloy implants.
The study of the chemical and electrochemical processes of metallic corrosion involves the use of several surface analysis techniques, such as scanning electron microscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy or X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, together with electrochemical techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, which study, development and application to the modelling of corrosion processes is one of the main scientific interests of Joao Fernandes, or the novel localised electrochemical techniques (scanning Kelvin probe, scanning vibrating electrode technique, localised electrochemical impedance spectroscopy or scanning electrochemical microscopy), all of them available at the group's laboratory.
His recent activity is also focused in the development of electrochemical sensors, from the corrosion sensors (in particular for early detection of aircraft corrosion, with one patented product) to biomedical sensors.
