He was first in Spain to use synchrotron radiation techniques to study heterogeneous catalysis (from 1987 until now, and more recently in operando mode), having worked to date in more than half a dozen European synchrotrons. He was also first in CSIC to use quantum calculations, since almost 30 years, to study heterogeneous catalysis and other photoactive materials. More than 20 years ago he was first in ICP to promote using microemulsions to make complex oxide nanoparticles, and more than 10 years ago he was the first in ICP in using solvothermal methods to make sulphide nanoparticles. He is in addition expert in XPS and FTIR (including operando mode) and in UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopies; and of course in EPR, which he still uses.
