Bio
Alex Rowe is a parasite biologist and malariologist who studies both humans and parasites to try to understand why malaria is a life-threatening disease in some cases, but not others. Her research has identified key adhesion interactions between parasites and human cells that underlie the development of severe malaria by causing obstruction to blood flow in small blood vessels. She has identified human genetic factors (blood groups such as blood group O and the Knops blood group) and parasite virulence factors (adhesion molecules) that interact to influence the risk of severe and fatal malaria. Her current research uses CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing to pinpoint the molecular interactions underlying life-threatening malaria and to explore the potential for drugs or vaccines to prevent severe disease.
Alex initially trained as a doctor, and became fascinated by host-parasite interactions after attending a seminar in medical school describing how blood disorders, such as sickle cell trait and thalassaemia, protect against malaria. After a D. Phil. in Oxford, she was awarded a Wellcome Trust travelling fellowship to work at the National Institutes of Health, USA, and she established a group in Edinburgh in 1998. Honours and awards include 4 successive Wellcome Trust Fellowships, a Personal Chair in Molecular Medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 2009, the 2014 C.A. Wright medal from the British Society for Parasitology for contributions to parasitology research, and election as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology (2019) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (2020).
