He had a dual fellowship training from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, PA and Yale University School of Medicine, CT , after completion of his general surgery training at Abington Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia. He is leading the minimally invasive Hepatobiliary surgery program at AdventHealth Tampa, a region premier and innovative liver surgery center, which was initiated in 2007.
Dr. Iswanto Sucandy maintains an active research agenda in the areas of gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas, and biliary surgical oncology with emphasis in the outcome of minimally invasive liver surgery for benign and malignant liver tumors. He has been an active academic contributor in a wide variety of gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary journals as well as surgery book chapters. Dr. Sucandy has been an active member of Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract (SSAT), Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), Southeastern Surgical Congress (SESC), American College of Surgeons (ACS), and Americas Hepatopancreatobiliary Association (AHPBA). He is actively participating in society committees to further advance education and outcomes of minimally invasive hepatobiliary surgery. His long-term goal is to establish a comprehensive hepatopancreatobiliary center with excellence in clinical service, education, and research.Dr. Iswanto Sucandy was selected to receive the Rosenfeld Cancer Center Award for clinical and academic excellence during his residency training. Dr. Sucandy then received the prestigious 2017 SAGES IRCAD fellowship Award to visit the Research Institute against Digestive Cancer located in Strasbourg, France. He was also awarded the 2019 SSAT Carol and Tom R. DeMeester Travelling Fellowship for Surgeons within the U.S. or Canada.
