Israel Gannot, an associate research professor in electrical and computer engineering, focuses on optical biopsy-optical diagnostic methods in medicine; laser-tissue interaction; fibers and waveguides for medical applications; lasers and optics in medicine; and theranostics.
He is a fellow of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS), and the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Gannot has authored 60 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 90 proceeding papers, seven book chapters, and has 14 patents. From 2009 to 2011, he served as the chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Tel-Aviv University. Throughout his career, Gannot’s emphasis on translational research has created collaborations with industry, including Lumenis, Polymicro, Ornim Medical, and Given Imaging. He is the co-founder and CEO of Optical Diagnostics.
Gannot received his PhD from Tel-Aviv University in 1994. From 1994 to 1997, he held a National Academy Sciences postdoctoral fellowship at the Office of Science and Technology of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Since 1997, he has been a member of the Biomedical Engineering Department, Faculty of Engineering at Tel-Aviv University. Between 2002 and 2005, he was a senior research scientist at the National Institutes of Health. Between 2005 and 2007, he was a visiting professor of biomedical engineering at the George Washington University, Washington DC. He joined Johns Hopkins University in 2010.
