Isabel Shutes is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Policy. She is the Programme Director of the MSc in International Social and Public Policy and teaches on a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.
Isabel's research interests focus on citizenship, migration, transnationalism and social policies. Her research examines the interactions of migration and social policies; social divisions and inequalities relating to citizenship and immigration status; and the implications for access to and experiences of work, care and social provision. Her research engages with different actors in migration and social policy processes, including state and civil society actors, service providers, trade unions and advocacy groups, and with different social groups of people. She has a particular interest in qualitative research methods.
Current and recent research projects include bEUcitizen (Barriers towards European Citizenship) 2013-17 http://beucitizen.eu/ , funded by the EU FP-7 programme, with colleagues across a number of European universities. She is collaborating with Dr Armine Ishkanian in the Department on a research project that examines civil society responses to the migration crisis in Greece; and with Dr Tania Burchardt, Dr Polina Obolenskaya and Dr Polly Vizard on a research project that examines poverty and disadvantage among migrant children in the UK.
Her research has been published in the Journal of Social Policy, Journal of European Social Policy, Social Policy and Administration, Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies, Social Politics, Ageing and Society. She is co-editor (with Bridget Anderson) of the book Migration and Care Labour: Theory, Policy and Politics (2014, Palgrave Macmillan: Migration, Diasporas and Citizenship Series).
