Isabel Rocha is Vice-rector for Innovation at NOVA University of Lisbon in Portugal and Principal Investigator at ITQB NOVA, from the same University. As Vice-Rector at NOVA, she coordinates the activities in knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship within the University, being also in charge of the recently launched Platform for Tourism and Hospitality and the Institute of Arts and Technology. She is part of the executive Board (Administration) of one Incubator and two collaborative Laboratories.
Isabel Rocha is a Biological Engineer and did her PhD in 2003 at the Bioprocess Systems Engineering Group under the supervision of Professor Eugénio C. Ferreira at Minho University Portugal. The main topics of her Ph.D. dissertation include Model-Based Optimization and control of Biopharmaceutical production processes. In 2003-2004 she was a post-doctoral research fellow at the Centre of Microbial Biotechnology – Technical University of Denmark, under the supervision of Professor Jens Nielsen. Her primary research activities included Metabolic Engineering and Systems Biology.
From 2004 to 2007 she was an Invited Assistant at the Biological Engineering Department, Minho University, Portugal, and from 2007 to 2017 a Principal Investigator and Assistant Professor at the same institution.
She has been conducting her research activities at the NOVA - ITQB (since 2017) and the Biological Engineering Centre at Minho (from 2004 to 2020).
To date, Isabel Rocha has published over 100 papers in international journals and books and 38 papers in international conferences. She is the PI of three major research projects and several other smaller ones and is highly experienced in coordinating and writing applications to different funding agencies. She is also an evaluator of several funding agencies, including the European Commission.
During 2007 she was a short-term visiting scholar at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, as part of the MIT-Portugal Program. She attended several Sloan-MIT MBA courses on Innovation, being also involved in the establishment of research collaborations between CEB and MIT research groups, and in the transference of good practices in Education and Innovation and Technology Licensing from MIT to Portuguese institutions. She was part of the MIT-Portugal faculty and was in charge, from 2007 to 2017, of a Portuguese educational program in innovation involving 4 universities and 2 PhD programs – the i-teams program.
She is also one of the founders of the companies Biotempo and SilicoLife and she is part of the board of Silicolife. SilicoLife was founded in 2010 and offers Computational Biology Solutions for Industrial Biotechnology applications. This company has won a national prize in entrepreneurship and is involved in major industrial biotechnology projects worldwide. Isabel Rocha was also the president of APBio – the Portuguese Bioindustries Association
