SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS
Scientific activity centered in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry. The primary subject of study is environmentally sustainable oxidations of organic compounds with green oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide, and metalloporphyrins or polyoxometallates as catalysts. The new area of interest is drug delivery systems using polyoxometalates as the drug it-self or as the drug carrier.
Inorg. Chem.: synthesis, structural studies, reactivity and applications of W polyoxometalates (POMs); synthesis and characterization of compounds with POMs and different organic cations; grafting POMs to organic linkers in order to prepare covalently linked heterogeneous catalyst.
Org. Chem.: synthesis, reactivity and applications of metalloporphyrins and metallochlorins; heterogenization of complexes.
Oxidative Catal.: green chem.; homogeneous and heterogeneous catal.; biomimetic oxidative valorization of natural and other organic substrates; oxidative transformations of organic compounds in the presence of benign oxidants as H2O2 or O2. S-containing organic compounds, asymmetric catal.
Drug delivery systems: POMs as the drug it-self, encapsulation of bioactive POMs into non-toxic macromolecules matrices or embedding them into a stable polymer shell-starch; or POMs as the drug carrier, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, since they provide analgesic and antipyretic effects.

2011/2012 - Co-supervison the young reseacher Roberto Pinto in his curricular project: Layered double hydroxides containing polyoxotungstates as catalysts in oxidation reactions", in Chemistry Department, University of Aveiro.
2012/2013 - Co-supervison the young reseacher Raquel Saborano in her curricular project: "Oxidation of drugs in the presence of polyoxometalates with hydrogen peroxide", in Chemistry Department, University of Aveiro.

Co-Supervision of Tiago André Gomes Duarte, Master Student at the Mestrado em Química Orgânica e Produtos Naturais, Thesis entitled Polioxometalatos: Estudos catalíticos em fase homogénea e heterogénea, 2012.

Teaching at the Chemistry Department of the University of Aveiro has been one activity in the last seven years, since 2006. The subjects have varied from Elements of Physical Chemistry; General Chemistry; Biorganic Chemistry; Q1 Labs; Biochemistry in laboratorial teaching.
