Isabel Badell

Isabel Badell, MD, PhD works in the Paediatric Department of the Hospital Santa Creu i Sant Pau (HSCSP) in Barcelona. This hospital is a general hospital and the Pediatric Department of is one of the few departments in our country with paediatric specialists in Hematology, taking care of children with hematologic disorders since the 70’s. Medical training was in University of Barcelona, Spain. She obtained de degree of Medicine in 1975. Pediatrics residency at HSCSP in Barcelona was performed between 1976 and 1979. Specialist in Pediatrics in 1979 was obtained and in Hematology in 1986. Doctoral Thesis was read in 1995: “Immunological recovery in patients who receive stem cell transplant for acute leukemia”. Associate Professor of Pediatrics in Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona from 1986 until 2006. Titular Professor of Pediatrics in Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona from 2007 until now. She was member of the Spanish team that performed the first bone marrow transplant in Spain in 1976. She works mainly in the field of Stem Cell Transplant in children, being one of the 3 most relevant Spanish centres working in this field. She works also with patients with hemoglobinopathies and acute leukemia. She is author of many publications related to the Pediatric Hematology, mainly related with stem cell transplantation, acute leukaemia and Fanconi Anemia. She was coordinator of SHOP (Spanish group for diagnosis and treatment of acute leukaemia and lymphoma in children) and also Coordinator of GETMON (Spanish group for stem cell transplant in children). She was founder member of Spanish Society of Pediatric Hematology in 1977, President in 2003 and she participated in the fusion of both Spanish Societies of Pediatric Hematology and Pediatric Oncology (SEHOP) being the first President in 2007. She has received grants from private and public funds for research mainly in the fields of acute leukaemia, stem cell transplantation and in Fanconi anemia (described in curriculum vitae). These are also the main subject in her publications. She has more than 110 publications in Pub. Med, most of them in international journals. She has imparted more than 100 conferences and 70 in post-degree courses of physicians and nurses. She has written 30 chapters in Hematology books. She is now member of Expert Committee of ONT (“Spanish Organization of transplants”). She has been the Thesis Director of 5 theses and is currently directing 5 more.
