Irina Markovina, Cand.Sci. (Linguistics), Professor of Psycholinguistics (Moscow Linguistic University, 1991 - 2016), Head of the Department of Foreign Languages, Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, Director of the University Language Learning Center, editorial board member of the peer-reviewed Russian journal “Problems of Psycholinguistics”. As a representative of the Russian Psycholinguistic School of Thought, has published over 100 books and articles on psycholinguistic aspects of translation, theoretical and practical problems of intercultural communication. She is well known in Russia and abroad as one of the developers, together with Prof. Juriy Sorokin, of the Ethnopsycholinguistic Lacuna Theory, which is now widely used worldwide to compare languages and cultures, linguistic images of the world, and to investigate the problem of intercultural understanding.
Has been teaching English for Medical Purpose for about 30 years, which served a good foundation for publishing a series of textbooks, workbooks, dictionaries of Medical English. Since 2014 in cooperation with Jonathan McFarland has developed a number of international projects aiming to make English part of everyday life in a Russian hospital. In 2016 J. McFarland was invited to lead the Academic Writing Office of Sechenov University (Moscow, Russia). The same year she invited a Hungarian researcher in Intercultural communication Istvan Lenart to join the Department of Foreign Languages to start teaching in English. The international team headed by Irina Markovina is actively involved in developing the English language environment in Sechenov university as well as in other Russian medical universities.
