Ian joined the NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI, at that time the NSW Department of Agriculture) in Australia in 1981 as an agronomist. He worked as an advisory agronomist at Yass in the southern tablelands of NSW between 1982 and 1994, specialising in pasture sowing and management, high rainfall cropping, pesticide management and application techniques, weed control and efficient fertiliser use. Between 1994 and 2012 Ian worked as a Spatial Information Officer at Orange (in the central tablelands of NSW), where he contributed to a diverse range of project areas including precision agriculture, mapping of dryland salinity, canal seepage and weeds, natural resource monitoring and management, and mapping and assessment of agricultural lands. He contributed to DPI’s responses to drought, exceptional circumstances and to emergencies such as pest and disease incursions. Ian also provided technical support to spatial information systems users within DPI. Since 2012, Ian has worked as the Seasonal Conditions Coordinator in Orange and is responsible for the coordination and production of monthly seasonal conditions reports and climatic outlook summaries for NSW.
