Bio
My academic career has spanned more than three decades in Genetics and Ophthalmology at Canadian Universities including McGill University, the University of Ottawa and the University of Alberta. At the end of 2008, I returned to Canada from the National Institutes of Health to Chair the Department of Ophthalmology, University of Alberta. In my role at the National Eye Institute of the NIH, in Bethesda, MD, I assisted in the development of a program on translational clinical research, applying the findings from research on genetic eye disease to improve the management of patients with heritable ocular disorders. Since my return to Canada, I have developed a translational research group again working on heritable eye disorders. We conducted Phase 1 trial of AAV2-mediated gene replacement in a condition called choroideremia, reporting results in 2018. We continue to work towards therapies for this condition and a better understanding of the pathophysiology of various retinal disorders, including occult macular dystrophy.
