Research summary
Ian Hamilton is a Reader (Associate Professor) at the UCL Energy Institute. Ian's research is focused on the nexus of the energy supply-demand system, sustainable building technologies, sustainable built environments, urban environmental quality, indoor environment and health. Ian’s research has included: investigation on the impact of energy efficiency interventions on energy demand in the residential stock; analysis of temporal and spatial energy use within the urban environment and its impact on the local climate; the trends and impact of energy use on indoor environment; residential stock energy use modelling; and, the integration of renewable energy into the urban form.
Ian is the Operating Agent for the International Energy Agency (IEA) Energy in Buildings and Communities (EBC) 'Annex 70 - Building Energy Epidemiology: Analysis of Real Building Energy Use at Scale' (www.energyepidemiology.org). The aim of the annex is to work in an international collaboration to identify user needs around energy demand in buildings and to establish best practice methods and harmonized formats for data collection, analysis and modelling.
Ian is also engaged in international research for a sustainable built environment. Ian is the Principle Investigator of a Newton Institutional Links grant "Energy Epidemiology: Understanding the relationship between Gender and energy use and efficiency co-benefits." in partnership with the Institute for Renewable Energy at National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico. He is also the Co-investigator of the CONACYT funded "Strategic Decisions to Promote Energy Efficiency in Low Income Households in Mexico" with Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM) in Mexico. Ian is a Co-investigator of a British Council Researcher Links Workshop Grants on "Energy Epidemiology: using building data to support energy and carbon policy in Latin America" with Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) in Brazil.
Ian is a Co-investigator on the EPSRC funded 'Centre for Research for Energy Demand Solutions' (www.creds.ac.uk); the NERC funded projects 'APEx: An Air Pollution Exposure model to integrate protection of vulnerable groups into the UK Clean Air Programme' and 'Actively anticipating the unintended consequences on air quality of future public policies (ANTICIPATE)'. Ian is the UK PI on European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) Climate Knowledge and Innovation Network (KIC) funded ‘Building Market Briefs’. Ian is a Co-investigator on the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit ‘Environmental Change and Health – Healthy and Sustainable Cities'.
Ian is the Principle Investigator on the 'Valuing the Health Impacts from Bill Rebates, Energy Efficiency and Heating Measures' funded by the UK Dept. of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. Working with LSHTM, this work seeks to quantify the health impact of introducing energy efficiency measures within the UK’s housing stock.
Ian is currently an author of the ongoing Lancet Countdown: Tracking Progress on Health and Climate Change (http://lancetcountdown.org/) initiative, co-leading the Mitigation theme. Ian was a Commissioner and co-author of the Lancet-Commission on Health and Climate Change 2015 that has sought to set out actions to protect human health. Ian was also part a major multi-disciplinary international collaboration for Health and Climate Change 'The Health Benefits of Tackling Climate Change', published in as a Lancet Series in November 2009, which investigated the health impact of green house gas mitigation strategies. Ian was also a Commissioner and co-author on the UCL-Lancet Commission 'Shaping Cities for Health' that outlined the means to address health through urban development.
