Irantzu Martinez Arkarazo is associate professor in the Department of Analytical Chemistry of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) since 2012. She is member of the IBeA research group qualified by the Basque Government as high performance group (2013-2018). In addition, IBeA is one of the three research groups forming the Formation and Research Unit on Global Change & Heritage of the UPV/EHU.
She defended her PhD Thesis with European Mention on the diagnosis, cleaning and protection of carbonate stones in 2007and has published more that 60 high impact scientific articles and book chapters conferring an h-index of 23 (Scopus).
Among the scientific dissemination activities, she has been member of the organizing committee of 3 international congresses hold in Bilbao: RAA2009, ISMEC2010 and THECHNART 2017. She has participated in diverse R&D Projects of public funding (31), including some projects financed by the Spanish ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO). In addition, she has worked in 15 contracts of relevance for Enterprises and/or administration, one of them as principal researcher.
Regarding the academic labor, since 2006 she has been lecturer in the Grades in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Geology and Biotechnology and she has been member of the Academic board of the Grade in Chemistry of the Faculty of Science and Technology (UPV/EHU) for 5 years. She has co-supervised 4 PhD thesis (one of them doctorate extraordinary award, 2015), 5 Master thesis in the Master in Environmental pollution and toxicology and 2 MSc in the Master in Landscape management: Heritage, Land and city, where she is lecturer and currently she is member of the teaching staff of the Doctoral Program in Scientific Cross-Disciplinary Approaches to Heritage and Landscape. Since 2019, she is the academic secretary of the Department of Analytical Chemistry.
Nowadays she works in the conservation of heritage, focusing on the development of environmental friendly stone restoration products (cleaning of metal and biological patina, and multifuctional consolidation products) as well as study of beachrock formations to synthesise new stone materials for civil engineering works or the recovery of marine ecosystems.
