Career Trajectory
Bio
Isabel Henriques is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Life Sciences, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Coimbra. She is also a member of the Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM), where she leads the “Microbial and Cell Biology Lab”. Until 2018 she was the PI of CESAM’s Research Line “Environmental Biology and Health”. She graduated in Biology in 1997, earned her MSc in Molecular Microbiology in 2001 and her PhD in Biology in 2006 from the University of Aveiro (UA), Portugal.
After a post-doc period, she began her career as an independent researcher in 2013, initially with a contract within the project “MARES-Sustainable Use of Marine Resources” co-financed by QREN and FEDER. From January 2014 to September 2018 she was Assistant Researcher funded by the “FCT Investigator” program. From 2013 to 2016 she also acted as Special Visiting Researcher at Federal University of Pará (Brazil) financed by the Brazilian government. Her research has been oriented to address the ecology of antibiotic resistance in the environment. She has been interested in the mechanisms of transfer and evolution of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, and how environmental and anthropogenic factors affect these mechanisms. A main interest has also been the impact of global changes in the microbiome (including soil and water microbiome) and microbiomes’ role in adaptation of organisms (plants and animals) to stressors.
She participated in several research projects funded by FCT (2 as PI and 9 as team member), by FCT through the Water JPI program (1 as PI at UA) and by CNRS-LAbex DRIIHM (2 as PI). She made important contributions to her field of research, which were published in more than 80 papers in WoS journals, cited more than 1500 times in the WoS search (January 2018), corresponding to an H factor of 22. She has been invited as keynote speaker at 4 international conferences and was member of the scientific committee of three international conferences. She participated in the design and implementation of a database that provides access to integron’s DNA sequences (integrall.bio.ua.pt).
She is a member of the Editorial Board of BMC Genomics, Frontiers in Microbiology and American Journal of Clinical Microbiology and Antimicrobials, and contributes as reviewer to 24 WoS journals in the areas of Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Environmental Sciences. Also acted as peer reviewer of projects and grants for national and international financing agencies, as the Natural Environment Research Council of the UK and the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.
Supervises/co-supervises 6 PhD students (plus 5 concluded), 2 MSc students (plus 22 concluded). Supervised 3 Post-docs. Since 2007 she lectured several undergraduate and post-graduate courses, coordinating the courses “Genetic Engineering” for undergraduate students and “Communication Skills in Life Sciences” for MSc students. From 2017 to 2018 she was director of the MSc in Microbiology, University of Aveiro. She was a member of the Scientific Council of the University of Aveiro (2018).
