Career Trajectory
Bio
Husam H. Hussein, Ph.D., P.E. in Civil Structural, has worked on state, county, and municipal projects. He has performed designs of superstructure and substructure bridge components along with replacement and rehabilitated bridge structures. Dr. Hussein has completed a wide variety of bridges constructed of precast concrete, steel trusses, steel girder/concrete deck, bridge load ratings, and others. Dr. Hussein has worked as a research scholar after his graduation from the Ohio Research Institute for Transportation and the Environment (ORITE) at Ohio University. He received his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in May 2018 in the Department of Civil Engineering at Ohio University, Athens, Ohio. He has been serving as an Early Career Editorial Board (ECEB) member of the Journal of Bridge Engineering. Also, a member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Hussein’s research interests have been specifically centered on bridge engineering, with emphasis on ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) connection design under static and dynamic loads, along with environmental factors. To investigate the UHPC joint performance, he has conducted extensive laboratory and field studies. This research area is important, as joint deterioration in precast adjacent box-girder bridges caused by longitudinal cracking can result in compromises in the load transfer, shear resistance, and monolithic behavior of the bridge structure. In recognition of the significance of this aspect of bridge construction, there continues to be ongoing funding in this sector as researchers investigate new methods and technologies to improve the UHPC connection design. Also, his research focuses on the use of synthetic fiber to improve the performance of high strength and lightweight concretes. Over the last ten years, he has gained research and industry experiences in the three main areas of structural engineering: field research, laboratory techniques, and finite element simulations.
