Bio
Rita Chang is an Associate Professor of aged and dementia care in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Western Sydney University. Dr Chang completed her PhD entitled “Evidence-based practice in Residential Aged Care Facilities” at the University of Sydney in 2009. Dr Chang career of age care and dementia research experience and clinical practice has spanned over 20 years. Dr Chang has immense experience in teaching and research, having held various key leadership roles within schools of nursing. Dr Chang was the Academic Program Director of Graduate Certificates and Master of Science in Gerontology and Rehabilitation Studies, and Dementia Care at the University of Wollongong (UOW) in the last seven years.
In recognition of her teaching, she was a recipient of the UOW VC’s Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning - in 2019 and 2021; Award for Excellence in Teaching of the year, in 2010, 2011 and 2012; Award for Excellence in Job of management of the year-Head of School, 2010.
Research:
Dr Chang has developed and sustained national and international multi-institutional partnerships, engaging in interdisciplinary research and supervision of higher research degree students. She is currently supervising 11 PhD students and 5 overseas research fellows. She has been awarded Vice-Chancellor’s For Excellence In Research Supervision, Emerging Researcher (Highly Commended) in 2022.
Dr Chang has been awarded funding from industry partnerships and Government tenders for learning, teaching and clinical research. Dr Chang has served on the Grants Committee of the Australian Association of Gerontology (AAG) Research Trust since 2021. Her most recent research focused on the knowledge translation of healthcare practitioners working with older people and their families. She has research skills in undertaking qualitative and quantitative research and contributed to the project aspects. Dr Chang is a lead investigator on many research projects including feeding difficulty projects which involving four hospitals from ISLHD, NSW, Australia, dementia and driving and a delirium care project with research partners from Taiwan including the Taipei Medical University and affiliated hospitals and Taiwan Alzheimer's disease Association. Many of her research findings were published in high-quality peer-review Journals and contributed as an author to book chapters and conference papers.
Other professional activities:
Dr Chang has actively participated in national and international aged and dementia research advocacy in recent years, serving as Board of Directors, of the Multicultural Communities Council of Illawarra (MCCI), Member of Illawarra Health and Medical Research Institute and President of the Taiwanese Scholar Australia Association (TSAA), nursing home accreditation advisor, member of the committee of dementia and age-friendly city promotion, member of the committee of long-term care development panel and accreditation appraiser of residential aged care facility, by government invitation, to the Department of Health and Aging. The results of her sustained research and teaching agenda have made a recognised impact on education, aged care policy and service delivery in Australia, Taiwan, China, and Indonesia.
