Bio
H. M. Gibbs (M'47-SM'63) received the B.S degrees in electrical engineering and physics from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, in 1960 and the Ph.D. degree in physics from the University of California in 1965.
He was a Member of Technical Staff at Bell Telephone Laboratories from 1967 to 1980, when he became a Professor of Optical Sciences at the University of Arizona, Tempe. His research focuses on semiconductor physics: MBE growth, radiative coupling, nonlinear optics, exciton formation, and quantum optics, especially quantum entanglement between a quantum dot and a photonic-crystal-slab nanocavity.
Dr. Gibbs is a Fellow of the Optical Society of America and of the American Physical Society, and a Life Fellow of the Franklin Institute. He served QELS as Program Committee Co-Chairs in 2000 and General Co-Chairs in 2002. He received the 1984 Michelson Medal of the Franklin Institute and a 1998 Humboldt Senior Research Award.
