Career Trajectory
Bio
I was an undergraduate student at the Facultad de Ciencias Exactas y Naturales (FCEN) of the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA) under the supervision of Osvaldo Reig, and I started my PhD in Biology in 1991 in Spain, under the supervision of Pere Alberch at the Evolutionary Biology and Biodiversity Department at the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales de Madrid. I obtained my Ph.D. at the Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) in 1995. I was a postdoctoral fellow of Professor Roberto Perazzo at the Centro de Estudios Avanzados (UBA) in Argentina. As a consequence of the Argentinian crisis of 2001, I moved to work as an advisor to ECLAC, United Nations (Santiago de Chile). My last postdoctoral position begun in June 2002 when I returned to Spain as bioinformatician to work with Joaquín Dopazo at the Bioinformatics Unit of the Centro Nacional de Investigaciones Oncológicas (CNIO) in Madrid.
In 2005, I became Director of the Comparative Genomics Unit of the Bioinformatics Department at the Centro de Investigación Príncipe Felipe (CIPF) in Valencia. Here, I directed two doctoral theses and taught bioinformatics and comparative genomics at the University of Cambridge (UK), the Gulbenkian Institute da Ciencia (Portugal), the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona), the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (UPM), and the Universidad de Alicante (UA). In 2012, I returned to Argentina as a Scientific Researcher of CONICET, and Professor of Population and Evolutionary Genomics at the FCEN-UBA. In 2013, I was convoked by the Argentinian Ministry of Science and Technology as Scientific Director of the Banco Nacional de Datos Genéticos de Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo. In 2014, I founded Biocódices, a genomics and bioinformatics spin-off of the scientific and technological system of Argentina. From 2016 to 2020, I was CSO at Biocodices. In September 2020, I moved as Director of the Population Genomics and Evolution Laboratory at the IEGEBA-CONICET.
My current academic and scientific interests are related to the advances of genomics on human health and evolution, the genetic architecture of human diseases, the consequences of the genetic differentiation of populations on health, and the application of embryo selection and the gene-editing technology for the elimination of simple and complex diseases.
