Advanced endoscopic imaging for detection of Barrett's disease, dysplasia and esophageal cancer
Endoscopic therapy for Barrett's disease, including radiofrequency ablation, photodynamic therapy and endoscopic resection
Dr. Wolfsen's academic career has focused on the development and optimized utilization of endoscopic techniques for the detection and treatment of Barrett's dysplasia and early esophageal adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. This work has included advanced imaging studies using technology such as high definition white light imaging, narrow band imaging, confocal laser endomicroscopy, spectroscopy (fluorescent, light scattering and diffuse reflectance) and volumetric endomicroscopy (optical Fourier domain imaging). These techniques hold promise for innovative screening and surveillance strategies. The development of minimally invasive endoscopic treatment modalities has included mucosal resection and ablation technologies such as photodynamic therapy, radiofrequency ablation and cryotherapy using liquid nitrogen spray and carbon dioxide. In addition to developmental studies, comparative outcome analysis of these advanced imaging and ablation methods is a focus of current research.
