Bio
His training and interests focus on the chemical mechanisms, structures, and specificity determinants of enzymes. The research he conducted during his 40-year career at BUSM focused on these aspects of lysyl oxidase (LOX), an enzyme discovered by researchers at the National Dental Institute before I arrived at BUSM. LOX was shown to be a key catalyst for initiating the formation of stable intermolecular and intramolecular crosslinks in collagen and elastin. PhD. Kagan's lab established a method to purify LOX and subsequently characterized its catalytic mechanism and electrostatic forces, which contribute to its surprisingly broad substrate specificity.
