Bio
I am a physician specializing in Clinical Microbiology over the last 21 years and currently Chair the Department of Medical Microbiology at Makerere University. I also chair the National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee in Uganda and am a member of the Uganda National Scientifc Advisory Committee on COVID-19. As chair of the National AMR committee , I coordinated the development of the Uganda AMR National Action Plan which was launched in 2018 and I am currently supporting its implementation. As a member of the national COVID-19 Scientific Advisory Committee, I have provided leadership and direction in aspects of infection control and prevention. Previously from 2005 to 2015, I was a Technical Advisor to Uganda’s Central Public Health Laboratories, a role that saw me coordinate development of the Country’s National Health Laboratories Policy of 2008 and the Strategic Plan for its Implementation. In this role I was also the main Ugandan counterpart in coordinating construction of the National Health Laboratories Building and Laboratories its current headquarters in Butabika, Kampala. My research interests focus on the epidemiology and mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance among enteric bacteria involved in blood stream and enteric infections. My department is a leader in clinical microbiology in Uganda. As subgrantees of the Fleming Fund Country Grant we are conducting AMR surveillance in Mulago and Kiruddu Hospitals and supporting stewardship and Infection Prevention and Control activities there. We have also been funded to start the Makerere University AMR Surveillance System that performs detailed phenotypic and molecular characterization of bacterial isolates from Mulago, Kiruddu and Arua Hospitals to enable storage of well annotated isolates at the Makerere University College of Health Sciences Biorepository. I am co-investigator in charge of microbiological testing in Uganda for the Drivers of Resistance in Uganda and Malawi project in Uganda, an MRC funded project. I am also in final stages of ethical and scientific approval of a Pfizer funded project; “Low-interventional, multi-centre study of the burden of nosocomial infections among hospitalised patients in sub-Saharan Africa” for which I am country PI.
