Bio
My research interests span the fields of ecology, phylogeography, historical biogeography, systematics, diversity and conservation of freshwater insects, in particular Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera and Trichoptera (mayflies, stoneflies and caddisflies). My focus has been on African freshwater ecosystems, and has recently expanded to include those in the UK, especially Northern Ireland. In January 2022, I joined the National Museums of Northern Ireland as Senior Curator of Natural Sciences. Here, as a freshwater biologist and museum curator, I am establishing new research programs with local collaborators looking at species diversity across multiple disciplines. Making museum natural history collections and their associated data available for research purposes is of fundamental importance as they contain hidden treasures of biological information. Adding new voucher material to expand these collections is essential for ongoing tracking of species changes over time.
Previously, I headed the Department of Freshwater Invertebrates at the Albany Museum in Grahamstown, South Africa, up to December 2021. I continue to be a senior research associate of Rhodes University’s Department of Zoology and Entomology while current PhD students complete their dissertations, and was a research associate of SAIAB (South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity) until December 2021. Outreach to young people to help them to appreciate the importance of understanding species diversity, and how each person can make a difference to protecting the natural world around them, is important to me.
