Bio
I have a passion and interest in antimicrobial resistance (AMR). AMR is a global challenge, presenting a very real threat and worrying healthcare crisis. I am particularly interested in the role that microbial biofilms play in AMR. To tackle AMR/biofilm infections actively and effectively, I have formally trained as a microbiologist for 10+ years (2011-2021) at UOW. In this time I have researched and specialised in understanding biofilms present in a variety of biofilm-associated infections (chronic wounds, cystic fibrosis lung, recurrent Strep throat) in the context of antimicrobial treatment failure. At present, I am a Post-Doctoral research associate at the University of Sydney in the School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. I am part of an interdisciplinary team comprising of locally and internationally renowned research experts working collaboratively on an ARC Discovery Project that explores cold atmospheric plasma (a novel technology harnessing the fourth state of matter) and its effect on bacterial biofilms.
As a passionate microbiologist, I endeavour to actively contribute, lead, and champion microbiology/AMR/biofilms on a national and international scale. This has seen me publish four first author papers, give invited talks nationally and internationally, several poster presentations, and co-organise an AMR Workshop (UOW, 2017). I am also an executive committee member for the Australian Society for Microbiology (NSW/ACT Branch, 2021-Present) and, have previously served on the Joint Academic Microbiology Seminars (Sydney Branch, 2021-22). Moreover, as the Convener for the Biofilm Special Interest Group for the Australian Society for Microbiology NSW/ACT Branch I have recently (April, 2022) re-invigorated and re-established this community in an effort to bring together Australian biofilm researchers. This community will facilitate collaboration, sharing of knowledge/resources/tools, mentoring, and bolster and highlight the efforts of Australian biofilm researchers.
