Dr. Heather Scott - Biography
Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology
Dalhousie University | IWK Health
Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada
Dr. Heather Scott is an Obstetrician, Gynaecologist and Maternal Fetal Medicine specialist at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Dr. Scott is also an Associate Professor with the Faculty of Medicine at Dalhousie University. Within the department, she currently holds positions as the Director of the Global Health Unit and as the Chief of Obstetrics.
Nationally, Dr. Scott is the Chair of the External Advisory Committee to the Canadian Peri-natal Surveillance System (CPSS). CPSS is a national health surveillance program delivered through the Maternal and Infant Health Section of the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC).
Throughout Dr. Scott’s career she has also been involved in several global health initiatives. While on sabbatical in 2011, Dr. Scott worked with the World Health Organization (WHO) to develop a course for primary obstetrical care providers, which focused on essential care during labour and childbirth. In 2014 Dr. Scott was invited to review the South African Confidential Enquiry into maternal deaths and to provide recommendations for future steps regarding the process of maternal death surveillance in South Africa.
Dr. Scott is an Instructor for the Canadian Network for International Surgery (CNIS) and is also an instructor for both ALARM Canada and ALARM International. She has taught Obstetrical Triage and Saving Mothers Lives (both in Ghana) and has been a member of re-search teams in Tanzania and Rwanda where the focus has been mentorship to improve maternal and newborn outcomes.
Currently, much of her Quality Improvement work has been focused on improved maternal mortality surveillance and review in Canada. It is recognized that maternal death surveillance, while undertaken nationally, has key gaps and inaccuracies. Dr. Scott is closely involved with CPSS and the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) in ongoing efforts to establish a more comprehensive assessment of maternal deaths in the country.
