个人简介
I am a Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Exeter, specialising in equitable improvement of access to psychological treatments, particularly during the perinatal period. I have conducted 9 clinical trials focussed on this remit, including the ECHO study, where we successfully engaged women from low-income, African-American backgrounds (USA), and one of the first digital interventions for postnatal depression, which recruited over 1100 women from broad socioeconomic groups (UK). I am especially proud of recently completed work on the DOBAT study, in which we co-produced and piloted an innovative narrative gaming-style app-based treatment for adolescent depression in S. Africa and Uganda.
In the UK, I am currently completing ESMI-II (Co-CI), a multiple work package, multi-methods study funded by NIHR HSDR where we found support for the effectiveness of community perinatal mental health teams, and am CI of a new (September, 2023) multi-site trial testing the effectiveness of a group intervention for antenatal anxiety (ACORN-II).
A key part of what I do is working to help ensure evidence-based practice is successfully implemented in real-world settings. As a National Clinical Advisor to NHS England's perinatal policy team, I am actively involved in supporting the implementation of psychological practice for mothers, families and 0-2 in perinatal community mental health teams. As a member of the NHSE Perinatal Clinical Reference Group and an executive member of the British Psychological Society perinatal faculty I am also supporting and consulting on national practice and standards for perinatal parents with mental health problems and their children.
I am also heavily engaged in training the next generation of perinatal psychological practitioners. Together with colleagues at the University of Liverpool, at Exeter we lead the NHSE WT&E funded Continuing Professional Development Course for perinatal psychologists (trained over 350 perinatal psychologists nationally to date), and at Exeter we also lead the Southwest NHS Talking Therapies perinatal psychology champions course.
I welcome opportunities to support the creation of policy and good practice standards, from membership in the expert development group for the 2014 NICE antenatal and postnatal mental health guidelines, to leading (with Dr. Sarah Healy) on the recent production of the NHS Talking Therapies perinatal competencies and Perinatal Positive Practice Guidance.
None of this would be possible without the support of others, and I am fortunate to have the privilege of working with an exceptional group of colleagues from NHS England, the NHS, and at Universities throughout the UK, S. Africa, the U.S., Sweden, the Netherlands, Australia and Japan.
