Bio
Haraldur has been employed as a Consultant within the Fishing Operation and Technology Branch (NFIFO) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) since September 2019. Before this role, he accumulated twenty-eight years of experience in fisheries research, primarily serving as a Senior Scientist at Iceland's Marine and Freshwater Research Institute (MFRI), with a few exceptions. During his tenure, he led various development and research projects related to fishing gear and advised on implementing fishery and fishing gear regulations within the Icelandic Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Haraldur played a key role in overseeing Iceland's short-term fisheries closure system on behalf of MFRI. Furthermore, he served as a lecturer for UNU-FTP, imparting knowledge on global fishing gear and fish behaviour. He actively participates in training students in data handling for statistical analysis. From 2017 to 2019, Haraldur was co-chair of the ICES-FAO Working Group on Fishing Technology and Fish Behavior (ICES-FAO WGFTFB). His experience extends to participation in numerous domestic research surveys in Iceland and international surveys conducted under the Nansen Program in West Africa between 1997 and 2004. Additionally, Haraldur boasts several years of firsthand experience as a commercial fisherman, starting at nine years old.
