个人简介
My research focusses on how plant traits, plant interactions and plant life histories contribute to the success of plant populations and their coexistence in plant communities. Experimentally, I focus on species-rich grasslands from temperate regions and particularly on belowground processes. At Radboud University we are well-equipped for such studies. Greenhouse and climate chambers for advanced work with individual plants, and the unique Nijmegen Phytotron where experimental communities at mesocosm scale are studied under outdoor conditions over multiple years. In all experiments, we analyse soil and root properties, including minirhizotron and molecular techniques. Theoretically, I am involved in population and community modelling. With a background in population matrix models, new models and statistics are employed to understand the success of populations, and how stable coexistence depends on differences between species and their interactions. Population modelling efforts are mostly carried with plants, including tropical trees, but also with other species including birds.
