Career Trajectory
Bio
I studied Econometrics at the University of Groningen (Rijksuniversiteit Groningen), where I graduted (M.Sc.) in 1987. Consecutively, I became a PhD-student at the CWI (Center for Mathematics and Computer Science) in Amsterdam, where I conducted research on multicriteria scheduling under the guidance of Jan Karel Lenstra. This resulted in a Ph.D. thesis titled Single-machine Bicriteria Scheduling; the corresponding Ph.D. degree was awarded by Eindhoven University of Technology, the Netherlands.
After my PhD, I spent two years as as post-doc. The first year, 1991-1992, at the mathematics department of Eindhoven University of Technology, and the second year, 1992-1993, at the faculty of Civil Engineering and Operations Research at Princeton (currently Operations Research and Financial Engineering).
In 1993, I became an Assistant Professor at the Mathematics department of Eindhoven University of Technology in the Combinatorial Optimization group headed by Jan Karel Lenstra.
Since January 1, 1999, I am working as a lecturer/researcher at the Department of Information and Computing Sciences at Utrecht University. First, I was a member of the group Algorithmic Systems, headed by Jan van Leeuwen, but recently I became a member of the Decision Support Systems group headed by Linda van der Gaag. My current research area is advanced planning algorithms, robust planning, machine scheduling. I like to work on problems that come from the real-world, or are related to practical problems; a good quote in this respect is Interesting areas that these problems could come from are
Public Transport
Rostering
Cows, pigs
Energy networks
Games
I publish in well-known international journals and conferences in Computer Science and Operations Research. My current H-score is 31 (find out here in my h-score how you can contribute the most to improving it).
I teach several bachelor and master courses in Computer Science, which are all more or less related to Operations Research and logistics. Furthermore, together with Marjan van den Akker I guide our PhD-student Marcel van Kooten Niekerk and together with Roland Gerearts I guide our PhD-student Arne Hillebrand. I further guide (and have guided) a number of M.sc. projects and experimentation projects (see link Projects).
