Career Trajectory
Bio
Helen Prance received the B.Sc. degree in physics from the University of Birmingham in 1977, the M.Sc. degree in bio-medical physics and bioengineering from the University of Aberdeen in 1978, and the Ph.D. degree in experimental physics from the University of Sussex. She is an Emeritus Professor (retired) and the former Head of the Department of Engineering and Design, University of Sussex. Her thesis topic was macroscopic quantum behavior in superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). Following her appointment to the Faculty of the School of Engineering, her research also encompassed electromagnetic sensors. She holds two international patents in sensor technology. She also has expertise in ultra-low noise amplifiers and receivers from radio frequency to microwave, and cryogenically cooled electronic systems. She is a member of the Sensor Technology Research Centre, specializing in the applications of a novel electric potential sensor to electrophysiology, human–machine interfacing, movement tracking, and sensor arrays, and the Institute of Physics and a Chartered Physicist.
