Bio
Graduate Degree in Medicine (1991), Doctor in Medicine "Cum laude" (1995) and Expert Degree in Clinical Trials (2003), all at the University of Seville.
At the end of his medical degree, travels to the United States where he obtains a work contract as a researcher at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami, in the Cardiovascular Surgery Service with Dr. E. Traad, collaborating in the creation of a database of operated patients of valve surgery and coronary bypass (1991-1992). At the same time, prepares the entrance examination to medical specialization in the United States popularly known as “Foreign”, which passes (1992) and agrees to do the residency in General Surgery for 2 years at Thomas Jefferson Universityand Fitzgerald Mercy Hospitals in Philadelphia (1993-1995), acquiring the bases of surgical technique and care of the acute patient. He also accessed and completed a year of Otolaryngology at Boston University Hospitals, where he coincided with Prof. Vaughan and Strong, who introduced carbon laser in medicine (1995-1996). In Boston his passion for Laryngology was unleashed within a School of recognized international prestige. He returns to Spain, passes the MIR exam (1997) and completes his Otolaryngology trainning at Virgen Macarena University Hospital in Seville (1997-2001).
Dr. Galera has been performing clinical, teaching and research functions as an ENT specialist at Virgen Macarena University Hospital in Seville from 2001 to date, until he firstly won the position of permanent statutory adjunct physician (2008) which later linked the full professorship by opposition (2010). As a clinician, he participates in the introduction and development of minimally invasive procedures, which leads him to carry out two training stays, one at the University Hospital of Vrije in Amsterdam, Holland, with Prof. Mahieu on surgery of the laryngeal framework (2002), and another at Ipswich NHS Hospital in the UK, with Dr Yung on the treatment of dacryocystitis by endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy (2015). As a teacher he has been Honorary Teaching Collaborator of the Department of Surgery (1998-2003), Associate Prof. of the Department of Surgery (2003-2011), Contracted Doctor Prof. accredited by ANECA (2008) and Residents Tutor at Virgen Macarena University Hospital (2005-2009 ). In addition, he has directed courses for the doctorate, specialty, end-of-degree, master and 10 doctoral theses. He has coordinated the teaching of Otolaryngology for students of medical degree in all the 3 University Hospitals (2012-2019) and he is the present Coordinator for the subjects, Audiometry and Adaptation of Hearing Devices (2014-present) and Audiology (2019-present), as well as teaches at the Voice School, dependent on the Occupational Risk Prevention Service and the ICE of the University of Seville (2003-present). As a researcher, his scientific production comprises more than 100 publications, including articles in scientific journals, monographs and book chapters. He has given more than 100 conferences on topics of the specialty, participated as a speaker in numerous national and international congresses and scientific meetings and as a Member of the organizing/scientific committee of two conferences: National Multidisciplinary Meeting on Extraesophageal Manifestations due to gastroesophageal reflux in Seville (2003 ) and I Congress of the European Academy of Otolaryngology-Heand and Neck Surgery held in Barcelona (2011). In addition, among the scientific positions he has held, the following should be highlighted: Member of the International Relations Committee of the Spanish Society of ENT (2003-2006), Member of the “Facial & Reconstructive Surgery Education Committee” of the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery (2014-2016), Oral Examiner of the European Board of ENT, Vienna, Austria (2010-present), Member of the Executive Committee of the European Board of ENT (2016-present) and Member of the RICOMS Committee of Experts (2019 -Present).
