Professor Schönfeldt is an advocate for nutrition research, promoting excellence through the creation, translation and dissemination of science-based information into policies, programmes and training programmes both nationally, and internationally. She publishes evidence on why country-specific food composition data is essential to make it possible to interpret the dietary outcomes of countries. She serves as scientific advisor to AFROFOODS, a network on the African continent, forming part of IUNS/UNU/FAO INFOODS Task Force. She is a co-director of the African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Food Systems. She holds a Department of Science and Innovation /National Research Foundation Research Chairs Initiative in Nutrition and Food Security.
Noteworthy milestones include an invitation to serve as the Chief Rapporteur of the FAO/WHO Expert Consultation on Protein Requirements for Human Health held in Auckland, New Zealand in March 2011. The availability of protein to decrease protein-energy malnutrition in children and the increasing need for an ageing population were emphasized.
She also formed part of the Evaluation Team that considered the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations’ work in Nutrition worldwide, where she recommended to the FAO board to expand the Nutrition Division.
In 2013 she was invited by the United Nations Systems Standing Committee on Nutrition (UNSCN) to perform a descriptive review of food and agricultural policies in South Africa encouraging the advancement of the discussion on nutrition-sensitive agriculture towards informing the ICN2 (November 2014) and the development of the new set of Sustainable Development Goals which replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
Since 2015 she has been co-leader of the University of Pretoria’s team that was awarded the tender by The Presidency and UNICEF to support the development of a multi-sectoral comprehensive national nutrition plan, namely the National Food and Nutrition Security Implementation Plan. The operation Phakisa approach is followed.
She is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the South African Codex Committee on Nutrition and Foods for Special Dietary Uses. She has authored a technical paper for the South African Food-Based Dietary Guidelines and has on numerous occasions assisted in reviewing Food Labelling Regulations and the proposed Nutrient Profiling Model for the Directorate of Food Control - including conducting a national survey on portions and serving sizes. She has performed an advisory role for the Department of Health’s e-Working Group on developing a CODEX definition for biofortification which South Africa is co-leading along with Zimbabwe.
Hettie has also been invited as External Reviewer of various national policies and programmes for the Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (DPME) of The Presidency, including the Diagnostics/Implementation Evaluation of the Nutrition Interventions for Children from Conception to Age 5, and the Implementation Evaluation of the National School Nutrition Programme. (Ongoing). She participated in a project by Reos, The Future of Food 2015-2030, convened by the Southern Africa Food Lab (SAFL) in partnership with WWF and the Ford Foundation.
Recently she led a case study on Gauteng Provincial Government's efforts to combat the impact of COVID-19, A provincial Deep Dive Chapter 5 Response to food insecurity during COVID-19.
Hettie is the scientific advisor for AFROFOODS which is the African regional network of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) International Network on Food Data Systems (INFOODS). As part of the Advisory Board and External Adviser on the International Postgraduate Courses on the Production and Use of Food Composition Data in Nutrition for more than 20 years, held in collaboration with FAO INFOODS, the Division of Human Nutrition of Wageningen University and Graduate School VLAG, she has participated in training more than 525 candidates globally. The course has also been incorporated into the curriculum of at least 20 universities.
As a researcher, she has guided the nutritional analyses of South African meat, dairy and dairy products, potatoes, sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables and many other traditional African foods. She is a co-author of the national food composition reference tables developed and published by the Medical Research Council, as well as the West African Food Composition Tables and continuously contributes regional data to the FAO online Food Databases. She also serves on the editorial board for various scientific journals.
Most recent awards include the distinguished Nevin Scrimshaw award at the previous 13th International Food Data Conference in 2019. I also received a shared success Story Award for the West African Food Tables.
