Bio
Hugo Fernandes (HF) obtained his Applied Biology degree from the University of Minho (Portugal), following an internship at the Faculty of Medicine, University Complutense Madrid (Spain), under the guidance of Prof. J Regueiro. After graduating, HF joined the group of Prof. C van Blitterswijk and Prof. J de Boer at the University of Twente (Netherlands), where he successfully completed his PhD in 2009. His groundbreaking research during this period made significant contributions to the field of Bone Tissue Engineering by unraveling the biomaterial-driven molecular mechanisms governing the differentiation of human stem cells into osteoblasts. These pioneering findings were published in top-tier journals such as PNAS and Biomaterials.
Continuing his academic journey, HF embarked on post-doctoral studies, where he established the use of high-throughput screening (HTS) technologies to identify and explore the role of small molecules in endothelial differentiation and function.
In 2011, HF was invited to lead a new research group at the University of Twente, focusing on developing innovative translational technologies for tendon and ligament regeneration. During his tenure, HF provided mentorship to two Ph.D. students and one visiting Ph.D. student from Rutgers University (USA), as well as six MSc and six BSc students. The remarkable outcomes of their collaborative efforts resulted in the publication of seven peer-reviewed articles and the submission of a patent (P113734NL00).
In 2014, HF joined the laboratory of Professor Lino Ferreira at the University of Coimbra (Portugal) where he directed his research towards two main areas: (i) the use of HTS platforms to discover miRNAs capable of modulating cell fate in the context of ageing & disease and (ii) engineering extracellular vesicles to deliver miRNAs in vivo.
In 2020, HF received the prestigious Individual Scientific Employment Stimuli grant from the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology to further develop his research in the field of Molecular Bioengineering.
In 2023, HF took up a position at the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing at the University of Coimbra, assuming the role of Principal Investigator and establishing his independent laboratory. His current research interests encompass (i) unraveling the mechanisms governing stem cell aging and (ii) developing therapeutic strategies capable of ameliorating or reversing this process.
HF secured research funds exceeding €1.8M and published 47 peer-reviewed manuscripts in journals such as PNAS, Biomaterials, and Molecular Therapy, accumulating over 2200 citations and achieving an h-index of 21 (Scopus). Additionally, HF has submitted two patents.
HF is actively involved as a referee for several leading journals in the field of Bioengineering and as an Expert Evaluator for institutions such as the EU (Sklodowska-Curie fellowships; 2017-22), the French National Research Agency, the Dunhill Medical Trust, the Swiss National Science Foundation, Action Medical Research, and the Polish Science Foundation.
HF's dedication to advancing the field is evident through his active participation as a Board Member (Secretary) of the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapy since 2019. Since 2023, HF is elected member of the III-UC Scientific Council and MIA-UC.
