Bio
Professor Hens Runhaar (1971) is Associate Professor of Governance of Nature and Biodiversity at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development at Utrecht University and Visiting Professor at Wageningen University and Research. Governance of Nature and Biodiversity is about nature conservation policy but also about stimulating the use of nature and ecosystem services while simultaneously contributing to biodiversity. Current research in this area focuses on steering towards more 'nature-inclusive' agriculture by public and private actors as well as by reforming the incumbent agricultural regime, and on the uptake and upscaling of 'nature-based solutions' in urban areas.
Hens has published over 90 scientific papers and (co)edited four special journal issues. The most recent special issue is titled "Environmental Policy Integration: Taking stock of policy practice in different contexts" and is published in Environmental Science and Policy. He was initiator and coordinator of the international Working Group on Environmental Policy Integration of the Earth System Governance Taskforce on Conceptual Foundations.
Next to his academic work Hens plays an active role in the practice of nature conservation and landscape restoration in the Netherlands (see CV on https://www.uu.nl/staff/HACRunhaar/Profile).
